Selfies. you love them or hate them. Many different examples crossing my timeline everyday. People make fun of them, but on the other hand, everybody makes them since our mobile devices offers this option.
Some people collect selfies as a diary, others use them for social media to show followers how they are doing or look. Next to the fact that it’s interesting that we collect so many self-portraits, we can make ourselves as pretty as possible… by adding filters. We create the most perfect version of ourselves.
We are more and more in control of how we want the world to see us. We create an identity thanks to selfies. An expression of beauty in the modern world.
This photographer wanted to make a statement. It’s not always that pretty face that shows up in real life. Actually, it’s almost never that pretty selfie-duck-face. Most days of the week we are busy, silly, exhausted, stressed, acting crazy or annoyed.
Exaggerating silly faces of seemingly normal contestants with the use of Scotch Tape, Wes Naman‘s photography is hamming it up. He wraps them with lips raised, eyebrows out of place, cheeks squeezed and ears pinned to the head. His talent for drawing reaction out of the audience is a treasure.
So he creates facial expression that fits us way better than the perfection beauty pic’s created for Instagram.
Be honest, how many of these distorted expressions can you relate to this week?
